My personal fave, classic pop tune in 4/4 time with lovely soaring chorus, and slightly
subversive lyrics (can be altered to rib Matty - "Where d'you get that smile, stolen with a w**k,
how d'you get so hard, like this [then appropriate 'hand movements']"). This one had a video - Livingstone & monkey at circus - it was on the "Chart Show" and
everything
(not sure why, when it didn't chart). Sadly the monkey was paid more than our intrepid
heroes. Better sleeve available with drag car, but Matty hasn't got it [He has now, limited green 7", cool, not scanned but - Matty].
B-Sides:- "Flirt" - gratuitous use of exhalation on the intro, then breaks into fast & furious indictment of said flirt ("How you gonna treat, another piece of meat... " You wrap her up and she's looking fantastic, up to your neck in the knicker elastic...." You thinks it's real but it's really just plastic"). Placebo with non-asphyxiated-Neil-Young-voice AND chord changes. "You Asked For" - pleasant acoustic ditty, only notable for almost saying my name. |

First Livingstone tune I ever heard, ah, the memories flood back. Has a hypnotic droning guitar
part from Andrew, with baggy style guitar from Morgan over the top, a la "There's no other
way", slightly whistful lyrics ("pull yourself apart, stick back together, analysis will get you
nowhere"), the chorus slips surreptitiously in and disappears just as effortlessly. The middle eight
is vaguely reminiscent of the pizzicato string section on "Motorcycle emptiness", by the Manics.
Overall one of their classiest works, just like candyfloss.
B-Sides:- "You Know Too Much"-As is customary, Livingstone slip in a rough-around-the-edges one, You Know Too Much sounds like a stoned Blur trying to play "Globe Alone". "Shake"- Intro is "Hey Big Spender", but with extra thrash-punk song tagged on its end. Obviously a bit of a crib of Pixie's "Debaser", but nevertheless, Livingstone's most electric tune. Good for encores and knocking people's pints out of their hands. |

Double A-Side:- Good Intentions/Gangsta
"Good Intentions"-Bit of glam rock stomp, this one, but without annoying singer. Suitably subdued Livingstone-signature middle eight, which crackles back into chorus. Short and sweet, with added harmonica. Praise be unto them!! "Gangsta"-fortunately (perhaps) not the band's depatrure into hardcore hip-hop, more like T-Rex being done over by a bunch of Goths. Suitably dark and scary, with vocals distorted for effect, makes lyrics relatively inaudible save for random works like " sex offences" and "You're gonna pull the trigger, you're such a fucking gangsta". Rough and brisk, like a shag with a prostitute in a dimly lit alley. B-Side:- "Anaesthesia"-Basically Andrew being pissed off with someone permanently off their face, possibly the crowd at Livingstone gigs. Comes with swirly guitar intro accordingly. Used to be their show closer. |
